What Element Am I? Year Element vs Day Master in Korean Saju
Most "what element am I" charts only look at your birth year. Korean saju looks deeper: the element of the day you were born — your Day Master — is the one that describes you. Here is how to find both, and why they are often different.
Your Year Element (the One Most Charts Show)
Your year element comes from the last digit of your birth year: years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire, and 8 or 9 are Earth. Even digits are Yang, odd digits are Yin — so 1995 is Yin Wood, and 2000 is Yang Metal.
One catch: in saju the year changes at Ipchun, the Start of Spring, around February 4 — not on January 1 or Lunar New Year. If you were born in January or early February, you belong to the previous year's element.
Your Day Master (the Element That Is You)
In Korean saju your chart has four pillars — year, month, day and hour of birth — each with its own element. The year pillar is about your roots and the wider world around you. The element of your day pillar, called the Day Master, is you: your nature, how you think and how you love.
That is why two people born in the same year can feel completely different. Your year element is shared by everyone born that year; your Day Master changes every day in a ten-day cycle, and your full day pillar comes around only once every 60 days.

The Five Elements in Brief
Wood grows and plans — idealistic, kind, always reaching. Fire shines and connects — warm, expressive, quick to inspire. Earth holds and steadies — reliable, patient, the one others lean on. Metal refines and decides — principled, precise, loyal. Water flows and understands — curious, adaptable, deep.
Each comes in a Yang form (bold, outward, like a tall tree or the sun) and a Yin form (subtle, inward, like a vine or a lantern), which gives the ten Day Masters.
The Element You Need
Saju also counts how much of each element appears across your whole chart. Many charts lean heavily on one or two elements and lack another. The element your chart lacks is the one that balances you — and saju says it is often what you are drawn to in places, colours, work and people.
Knowing your Day Master and your missing element together is the quickest way to understand your chart.

Questions people ask
What element am I if I was born in 1995?
1995 ends in 5, so your year element is Yin Wood — unless you were born before Ipchun (around February 4, 1995), in which case you belong to 1994, Yang Wood. Your Day Master, from your day of birth, can be any of the ten.
Is my Chinese zodiac element the same as my saju element?
Your zodiac (year) element is one of the eight characters in your saju chart. Saju treats the Day Master, the element of your birth day, as the one that represents you.
Why do I need my birth time?
Your birth time sets the hour pillar, which adds detail about your inner world. It changes your Day Master only for births close to midnight, so you can still find it without a time.
Which element is the strongest?
None. Each element feeds one element and controls another, so balance matters more than any single element. A chart is read by how its elements work together.
