Saju Cafés in Seoul: What to Expect, Prices and How to Prepare (in English)
Getting your saju read has become one of the most-booked experiences for visitors to Seoul. Here is what actually happens in a saju café, what to bring, and how to prepare so the reading makes sense — even if your reader speaks little English.
What Is a Saju Café?
A saju café (사주카페) is a café or small studio where a reader looks at your four pillars — the year, month, day and hour of your birth — and talks you through your personality, relationships and the timing themes of the years ahead. Many Koreans visit before a big decision, around the New Year, or simply for fun with friends.
Seoul's tourism office now promotes saju cafés as a cultural experience, and neighbourhoods popular with young visitors, such as Hongdae, have places that welcome foreigners. Readings are usually about 20–40 minutes.
How Much Does It Cost?
A typical 30-minute reading in Seoul costs around ₩50,000 (roughly $35), and some cafés charge per person or per topic. English-speaking readers are still rare, so tours and booking platforms that include a translator often cost more.
Prices and English support change often, so check recent reviews before you go.
Is this your Day Master?
Enter your birthday and meet your character among the Twenty — calculated with true solar time at your birthplace.
What to Bring
Your exact birth date and, if you can, your birth time. Saju uses the hour of birth for the fourth pillar, so ask a parent or check your birth certificate before your trip. If you don't know it, a good reader will read your three known pillars.
Your birthplace matters too. Korean practice converts your birth time to local solar time, so a reader may ask where you were born.
If you want a compatibility reading (gunghap, 궁합), bring your partner's birth details as well — with their permission.
Read Your Chart Before You Go
Most of a saju reading is built on a few key ideas: your Day Master (the element of the day you were born), the balance of the five elements in your chart, and your ten-year luck cycles. If you already know your Day Master and which element your chart lacks, you can follow along and ask much better questions.
You can calculate your four pillars free in English — with true solar time at your birthplace — and see your Day Master character in about a minute. Then bring your questions to Seoul.
Good Questions to Ask Your Reader
Which element does my chart need most, and how can I bring more of it into daily life? Which years in my ten-year luck cycle look like turning points? What kind of partner energy balances my chart? Is this a good season to start something new?
Remember that saju describes tendencies and timing themes, not fixed fate. A good reader will talk about choices, not certainties — and will never tell you what another person will feel or do.
Questions people ask
Do saju cafés in Seoul speak English?
Some do, especially in areas popular with visitors, but many readers speak little English. Booking platforms and tours sometimes include a translator. Knowing your own Day Master and five-element balance beforehand helps a lot.
How much is a saju reading in Seoul?
Around ₩50,000 for about 30 minutes is a common price, though it varies by café, topic and whether a translator is included.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You can still get a reading of your year, month and day pillars. The hour pillar adds detail about your inner world and later years, so it is worth finding your birth time if you can.
Is saju the same as Chinese BaZi?
They share the same four-pillar structure. Korean saju has its own conventions, such as using local solar time and the Korean lunar calendar, and its own interpretive traditions.
Can I get a saju reading online in English?
Yes. You can calculate your four pillars and read your Day Master free online in English, and go deeper with written readings — a good way to prepare before, or remember after, a café visit.
