Saju vs MBTI: How Korean Four Pillars Compare to Your Personality Type

Ask a group of Koreans their MBTI and everyone has an answer. Ask about their saju and many will tell you that too. Both describe personality — but in very different ways. Here is how they compare.

GuideKorean saju basics

Where Each One Comes From

MBTI is a questionnaire: you answer questions about how you prefer to think and act, and you get one of 16 four-letter types. Your type can change if your answers change.

Saju (사주) is calculated, not answered. It reads the year, month, day and hour of your birth as four pillars of the five elements. The same birth details always give the same chart.

Your "Type" in Saju: the Day Master

The closest thing saju has to an MBTI type is your Day Master — the element of the day you were born. There are ten: Yang and Yin of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. A Yang Wood person is often compared to a tall tree: upright and protective. A Yin Water person is like rain: quiet, intuitive, quietly nourishing.

Saju then adds layers MBTI doesn't have: the balance of elements across your whole chart, your relationships between elements, and timing — ten-year luck cycles and yearly themes.

Do Saju and MBTI Match Up?

Not one-to-one. People with the same Day Master can test as different MBTI types, and the same MBTI type appears under every Day Master. They measure different things: MBTI captures how you see yourself today; saju describes the tendencies in your birth chart.

That is why many Koreans enjoy both. MBTI gives a quick label to talk about; saju adds a story about your nature, your timing and how you fit with others.

Using Both for Fun and Reflection

Try comparing them: if you are an outgoing type in MBTI but your chart is full of quiet Water, you might notice you recharge alone even when you love people. If your chart is heavy in Fire, the spark others see in you may show up in any MBTI type.

Neither is a fixed verdict. Both are tools for reflection — a way to notice patterns and talk about them.

Questions people ask

Is saju more accurate than MBTI?

They are different kinds of tools. MBTI is a self-report questionnaire; saju is a traditional system calculated from birth data. Both are best used for reflection and fun, not as fixed truths.

Why are Koreans so into MBTI and saju?

Both give people a shared, light way to talk about personality and relationships. Saju has centuries of tradition in Korea; MBTI became a pop-culture favourite more recently.

How many saju types are there?

Ten Day Masters, or sixty if you count the full day pillar (the Day Master plus the animal of your birth day).

Can my saju change like my MBTI?

Your birth chart doesn't change, but saju reads changing timing — ten-year luck cycles and yearly themes — so different parts of your chart come forward at different times.
