Seollal 2027: Korean New Year Fortunes, Tojeong Bigyeol and Your Saju Year

Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, falls on February 6 in 2027. Families gather, bow to their elders, eat rice-cake soup — and many people check their fortune for the year ahead. Here is how Korean New Year and saju fit together.

GuideKorean saju basics

How Koreans Celebrate Seollal

Seollal (설날) is one of Korea's biggest holidays, usually a three-day break. Families travel home, perform ancestral rites, and younger relatives give a deep New Year's bow called sebae (세배) to their elders, who answer with wishes for the year — and often an envelope of money.

The signature dish is tteokguk (떡국), a soup of sliced rice cakes. Tradition says eating a bowl makes you one year older, so the question "How many bowls have you had?" is a playful way to ask someone's age.

New Year Fortunes: Tojeong Bigyeol

Checking your fortune for the new year is a long Korean habit. The best known is Tojeong Bigyeol (토정비결), a Joseon-era fortune book attributed to the scholar Tojeong, which gives a reading for the year from your birth details.

Today many Koreans read a sinnyeon unse (신년운세, new-year fortune) online in January and February, or visit a saju café with friends — for fun, reflection and something to talk about over the holidays.

When Does the Saju Year Actually Start?

Here is a detail many people miss: in saju the year does not change at Seollal. It changes at Ipchun (입춘), the Start of Spring, when the sun reaches a fixed point in the sky — in 2027, on February 4 at 10:46 AM Korea time, two days before Seollal.

So if you were born between January 1 and early February, your saju year — and your year animal — belongs to the previous year. It is one of the first things a good saju reader checks.

2027, the Red Fire Goat Year

2027 is the year of 丁未 (jeongmi): Yin Fire over the Earth Goat, often called the Red Fire Goat. Fire is warm and expressive; the Goat branch is gentle Earth that also holds a little Fire and Wood. In saju, what a year brings you depends on how its elements meet your own chart — especially your Day Master.

That is why two people with the same zodiac animal can have very different years. Your month-by-month themes come from your own birth chart.

Questions people ask

When is Seollal in 2027?

Saturday, February 6, 2027. The holiday usually spans the day before and the day after as well.

Is my 2027 zodiac animal the Goat?

Only if you were born in the Goat year. 2027 is the Goat year; your own animal comes from your birth year — and in saju that year starts at Ipchun, around February 4.

What is Tojeong Bigyeol?

A traditional Korean New Year fortune book from the Joseon era, attributed to the scholar Tojeong. Many Koreans still read a version of it, or a modern new-year fortune, in January and February.

Does saju predict what will happen in 2027?

No. It describes timing themes and tendencies — when energy tends to favour starting, building or resting — for reflection. It does not predict specific events or anyone else's choices.
