Don't Know Your Birth Time? How Korean Saju Works Without It
Saju means “four pillars”: the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Many people outside Korea never learned their birth time — and that is fine. Most of a saju reading comes from your birth date alone. Here is what changes when the hour is missing.
Three Pillars Come From Your Date
Your year, month and day pillars need only your birth date. That gives six of the eight characters in your chart — including your Day Master, the stem of your day pillar, which is the heart of every reading.
So without a birth time you still get your Day Master, your element balance from six characters, your year animal, your month pillar's season and your ten-year luck cycles.
What the Hour Pillar Adds
The hour pillar adds two more characters. Readers traditionally link it with later life, private hopes and the self you show to the people closest to you. It can shift your element balance a little and add a Ten God or a symbolic star.
A reading without it is like a portrait with the background left soft: the face is all there.

Saju Hours Are Two Hours Long
Saju divides the day into twelve two-hour blocks, one for each animal: the Rat hour runs from about 11 PM to 1 AM, the Ox from 1 to 3 AM, and so on. So you do not need the exact minute — “around 3 PM” is usually enough, unless it is close to the odd-hour boundary.
Good saju calculators also convert clock time to true solar time at your birthplace, which can move your hour by up to an hour or more depending on where you were born and on daylight saving time.
Born Near Midnight?
Births between about 11 PM and 1 AM need extra care, because they sit on the line between two days — and your day pillar sets your Day Master. Schools differ on whether the day changes at 11 PM or at midnight, and true solar time can push a birth across either line.
If you were born close to midnight, it is worth finding your exact time before reading too much into your Day Master.
How to Find Your Birth Time
Check your birth certificate first — many long-form certificates record the time. Hospital records, a baby book, old family photos with dates, or a parent's memory of “just after lunch” can all help.
If you only know roughly, enter the date alone: our free reading works without a time and skips the birthplace question, then you can add the hour later for the full eight characters.

Questions people ask
Can I get a saju reading without my birth time?
Yes. The year, month and day pillars — six of eight characters, including your Day Master — come from your date alone.
What does the hour pillar mean?
Traditionally it relates to later life, private hopes and the self you show closest people. It adds two characters to your chart.
Do I need my exact birth minute?
Usually not. Saju hours are two-hour blocks, so an approximate time works unless you were born near a boundary such as 11 PM, 1 AM or 3 AM.
I was born around midnight. Which day is my day pillar?
It depends on the exact time, the school's day boundary (11 PM or midnight) and true solar time at your birthplace — find your exact time if you can.
