First Snow in Korea (첫눈): Meaning, Love Legends and Your Winter Saju

In Korea the first snow of the year is more than weather. Phones light up with “It’s snowing!” messages, friends keep old promises to meet, and couples hope to be side by side when the first flakes fall. Here is what the first snow means — and how Korean saju reads the season it opens.

What the First Snow Means in Korea

The first snow, cheonnun (첫눈), carries a romantic promise in Korea: people say that if you are with the one you love when the first snow falls, your love will come true. That is why “Let’s meet when the first snow falls” (첫눈 오면 만나자) is such a familiar line — between couples, between friends, and in countless K-drama winter scenes.

It is also a day for small messages. Many people text someone they have been thinking about the moment the first flakes appear — an easy, light way to say “you were on my mind.”

The Balsam-Nail Wish

There is an older first-snow tradition too. In summer, children and young women dye their fingernails orange with crushed balsam flowers (bongseonhwa, 봉숭아). The saying goes that if the color is still on your nails when the first snow falls, your first love will come true.

So every autumn, some people watch their nails grow out and quietly hope the last sliver of orange lasts until the snow.

When Does the First Snow Fall in Seoul?

Seoul usually sees its first snow in mid to late November, though it changes from year to year. The official first snow is recorded at the Seoul weather station — and even a few flakes that melt on landing count.

The traditional calendar agrees: one of the 24 solar terms, Soseol (소설, “Minor Snow”), falls around November 22, and Daeseol (대설, “Major Snow”) around December 7.

First Snow in Korean Saju: the Water Season

In saju, winter belongs to Water — the element of depth, rest and quiet feeling. The saju winter begins at Ipdong (입동), the Start of Winter, around November 7, and runs through the three winter months until Ipchun in early February.

How winter feels depends on your Day Master. Water feeds Wood, so for Wood Day Masters winter tends to restore. Water tames Fire, so Fire Day Masters are asked for patience. Earth shapes Water, so Earth Day Masters find practical chances. Metal gives rise to Water, so Metal Day Masters find their feelings easier to put into words. And for Water Day Masters it is their own season, so feelings run deeper than usual.
